Google brings Gemini AI to car dashboards

Google is installing its new generative AI assistant, Gemini, in millions of vehicles that run Google built‑in tech. The move replaces the old voice command system with a chat‑style interface that can hold a conversation while you drive.

A true digital co‑pilot

Gemini lets drivers speak naturally to handle tasks such as:

  • Finding stops along a route
  • Summarizing incoming messages
  • Checking battery range or charging needs

The AI remembers follow‑up questions and keeps context, so you don’t have to repeat yourself each time. It feels less like using software and more like talking to a helper.

How the rollout works

General Motors leads the launch, fitting Gemini into about four million cars across Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC. The upgrade reaches older models too—any compatible vehicle from 2022 onward will receive the feature through an over‑the‑air update.

First wave ships in English for the United States. Google plans to add more languages and regions in the coming months.

"Integrating generative AI directly into the driver’s seat is a game‑changer for the auto industry," says an industry analyst.

Why it matters

Embedding Gemini turns a dashboard into a smart assistant that can manage navigation, communications and vehicle settings without pulling your eyes off the road. The technology sets a new standard for in‑car AI and could push other makers to follow suit.
